It’s Not Just Dental Cleaning
We make many calls in our office to schedule patients for their dental hygiene visit. We recommend patients be seen at least twice per year for dental exam and cleaning as well as an Oral Cancer Screening.
Dental examinations, when properly done and which include a screening for oral cancer can save lives.
We are proud that our dental team conscientiously performs an oral cancer screening at every dental hygiene visit. Unlike many other cancer screening procedures, there is no invasive technique necessary to look for it, no discomfort or pain involved, and it is easy to have your mouth examined for the early signs of disease.
When you have an oral cancer screen your hygienist or dentist will do a systematic visual examination of all the soft tissues, including manual extension of the tongue to examine its base, a bimanual palpation of the floor of the mouth, a digital examination of the borders of the tongue, and the lymph nodes surrounding the oral cavity and in the neck.
If our Dr.’s or hygienist find an area of concern they may opt to do a brush biopsy which will likely provide an answer to the question of whether risk exists or not, through a quick, minimally invasive, and inexpensive procedure. Should positive results be returned a conventional biopsy and pathology will be done, often by an Oral Surgeon.
Positive identification of oral cancers at the early stages results in the best prognosis for cure.
The next time you want to postpone your dental hygiene visit, please remember that we will not only clean and shine up your smile, we will be doing your preventive cancer screening as well.
